Toyota Focuses on Selling Hydrogen Fuel Cars to Europe and China

Toyota, a leading automotive company, is strategically expanding its sales of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in Europe and China, aiming to sell 200,000 units by 2030. This shift in Toyota’s strategy highlights the company’s determination to penetrate these key markets with environmentally friendly transportation options.

In a bold move, Toyota has redirected its attention from North America to Europe and China as the primary markets for their hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. This strategic decision is based on the higher production and demand for hydrogen vehicles in these regions, making them ideal targets for expansion.

According to Toyota’s Chief Technology Officer, Hiroki Nakajima, the sales target of 200,000 units by 2030 is well within reach, given the company’s dedicated focus on the European and Chinese markets. This ambitious goal underscores Toyota’s commitment to promoting the adoption of hydrogen vehicles on a global scale.

Toyota’s strategy involves two essential elements: reducing costs and establishing partnerships with other companies. The company believes that by reducing production costs, they can make hydrogen fuel cell vehicles more accessible to consumers. In recent news, Toyota announced the establishment of a Hydrogen Plant business, aimed at enhancing the production of hydrogen and fuel cells.

“Toyota aims to incorporate fuel cell systems into 100,000 vehicles annually by 2030,” stated Nakajima in an interview with Reuters. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with other companies to achieve even higher cost reductions, potentially reaching up to 50%. Toyota is actively pursuing partnerships while securing orders for the projected 200,000 vehicles by 2030.

Earlier this year, Toyota expanded its semi-fuel cell plans in the United States. The company unveiled a commercial fuel cell truck that combines its advanced fuel cell technology with chassis from Peterbilt and Kenworth. Presently, Toyota is conducting prototype testing of a Toyota-powered Kenworth truck in California, with the assistance of the US Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). This collaboration aims to explore the use of fuel cell technology in grid operations.

Apart from the already available Mirai, Toyota’s fuel cell passenger car, the automaker has recently announced the development of a fuel cell version of the Crown, expanding its range of hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Toyota is actively planning for the future of fuel cell systems, with the next generation set to debut in 2026. The company aims to achieve a lower cost while simultaneously increasing the range and durability of their fuel cell vehicles. This forward-thinking approach reflects Toyota’s dedication to continuous innovation and sustainability in the automotive industry.
