Toyota Chairman Reveals Exciting Details of the New Electric Sports Car

Toyota’s Chairman and former CEO, Akio Toyoda, has unveiled exciting details about the highly anticipated Toyota electric sports car. In a recent announcement, he disclosed that the prototype of this groundbreaking vehicle is currently undergoing extensive testing.

Uniquely involved in the development process himself, Toyoda ensured that the electric sports car would feature a manual transmission with a clutch pedal. Remarkably, this car is designed to produce an engine sound reminiscent of a Lexus, effectively blurring the line between electric and internal combustion engines for the driver.

During the Le Mans 24 Hours event, Toyoda emphasized, “The paramount objective is not solely the powertrain of the car, but rather the exhilaration and enjoyment it offers while driving, regardless of the underlying technology. The utmost priority in creating cars like this is that they must be an absolute joy to drive.”

As part of its development, Toyota Gazoo Racing has already commenced testing the first battery-powered sports car prototype. Akio Toyoda personally spearheaded the project to ensure it lives up to his uncompromising expectations.

Toyoda expressed his expectation that the new car should provide a driving experience on par with the current combustion engine models, such as the GR86, GR Supra, GR Yaris, and GR Corolla. Therefore, he proposed that the car should incorporate many of the characteristics found in conventional fuel-powered vehicles, including a manual transmission, a clutch, and an engine-like sound.

“The key distinction between our electric sports car and other electric vehicles under development is the audibility of the engine. Although you won’t smell gasoline, you can genuinely hear the engine. Furthermore, it features a manual transmission and a clutch,” stated Toyoda.

In late 2021, Toyota announced its ambitious plan to introduce 30 electric vehicles across the Toyota and Lexus brands by 2030, encompassing sports cars as well. Lexus presented a supercar concept akin to the legendary LFA, while Toyota showcased a vehicle reminiscent of the modern MR2.

While specific details regarding the release date of Toyota’s electric sports car remain undisclosed, Toyoda acknowledged that it is uncertain whether the vehicle will enter production. Last year, Toyota encountered challenges after the recall of its first model, the bZ4X, due to safety concerns, which resulted in the sale of 26,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

As Toyota relentlessly pursues its commitment to innovation and electrification, the prospect of an exhilarating electric sports car that seamlessly merges cutting-edge technology with the joy of driving becomes increasingly tantalizing. With Akio Toyoda personally shepherding this visionary project, the automotive industry eagerly awaits further updates on the electrifying future that Toyota is diligently crafting.
