Japanese automotive leaders express their remarkable perspectives on the impact of Chinese electric cars within Indonesia. A consensus emerges among these leaders: Chinese car manufacturers exhibit remarkable assertiveness, particularly in their endeavors within the Indonesian market.
Advancements in Chinese Electric Car Technology
These leaders discern a series of advantages that Chinese car manufacturers have thoughtfully incorporated into their electric car offerings in Indonesia. A key area of distinction, according to Atsushi Kurita, the President Director of PT Mitsubishi Motors Krama Yudha Sales Indonesia (MMKSI), lies in the realm of batteries. Chinese electric cars, he asserts, possess a substantial edge when it comes to battery technology, leading to significantly enhanced mileage capabilities.
Kurita emphasizes, “Chinese electric cars benefit from highly sophisticated battery factories, ensuring exceptional mileage performance.” This technological edge in battery production positions Chinese electric cars as formidable contenders in the market.

Contrasting Approaches: Japan vs. China
In contrast, Japanese car manufacturers have taken a different route in their journey towards electric mobility. Unlike their Chinese counterparts, the Japanese automotive industry did not make an immediate transition from conventional gasoline-powered cars to pure electric vehicles. Instead, they ventured into the hybrid car segment first, with an emphasis on developing batteries that enhance the performance of these hybrid vehicles.
As a result, there exists a discernible disparity in mileage capabilities between batteries produced in Japan and China. Kurita acknowledges this discrepancy, stating, “Currently, our focus is transitioning from hybrid car batteries to electric car batteries. I am confident that we will bridge the gap and match the mileage capabilities of Chinese electric car batteries.”
Honda’s Acknowledgment of Chinese Advancements
In a separate context, Toshihiro Mibe, CEO of Honda Motor Co, publicly commends Chinese car manufacturers for their achievements in the realm of electric vehicles. He openly recognizes the exceptional strides made in electrification technology by China.
Mibe remarks, “In terms of fundamental aspects such as vehicle performance, handling, and safety, China has made significant advancements in the development of smart electric vehicles.” He further highlights his recent experience with Chinese electric vehicles, stating, “I had the opportunity to meet with BYD and test various electric vehicles in China during a recent visit.”
