Xi Jinping’s Visit to Chengdu Leads to Temporary Ban on Tesla Cars

In a significant turn of events in China, the city of Chengdu witnessed an important visit by President Xi Jinping, coinciding with the FISU World University Games’ opening ceremony on Friday, July 28th. As part of the distinguished attendees, Indonesian President Jokowi was also scheduled to grace the occasion, making Chengdu a crucial location for this event.

To ensure heightened security during the visit, the Chinese government took the precautionary measure of temporarily banning Tesla cars from circulating within Chengdu. Reports indicate that the ban was specifically enforced for Tesla vehicles entering the area designated for the World University Games.

The news of the Tesla car ban surfaced through a viral video on China’s popular social media platform, Douyin. In the video, authorities can be seen restricting Tesla drivers from entering the vicinity of the prestigious sporting event.

Fortune magazine reported that Chengdu’s security authorities implemented stringent traffic regulations that will be in effect until August 8, 2023, with several roads closed to pedestrians during this period.

Security Concerns and the Ban on Tesla Cars

The specific reasons behind the ban on Tesla cars entering or circulating in Chengdu remain unclear. However, it is worth noting that the Chinese government has had a long-standing restriction on allowing electric cars manufactured by Elon Musk’s company to enter sensitive facilities in the country.

One of the primary concerns cited is the fear of espionage through the sophisticated sensors present in Tesla’s electric vehicles. However, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has categorically denied these allegations and reiterated the company’s commitment to staying away from any involvement in espionage activities.

Elon Musk emphasized that cooperating with any government for such purposes would be detrimental to the company’s reputation and prospects. He also urged Tesla owners to respect and adhere to the regulations imposed by China during their stay or visits.

“Regardless of whether it’s China or the United States, engaging in espionage through commercial companies would have severe negative repercussions. It is imperative to avoid such activities,” Elon Musk stated.

The ban on Tesla cars in Chengdu serves as a precautionary measure to address security concerns during significant events like the FISU World University Games and when dignitaries like President Xi Jinping and President Jokowi are present.
