Ford has acknowledged the need for collaboration with Tesla to ensure access to superchargers during the transition to electric vehicles. This decision comes in light of the recent unveiling of Ford’s Lightning F-150 truck.
The CEOs of both Ford, Jim Farley, and Tesla, Elon Musk, have engaged in discussions on this matter. Farley made an announcement stating that Ford will be adopting Tesla’s North American charging standard (NACS).
According to Farley, “We believe that this partnership marks a significant milestone for our industry and benefits all consumers of electric power” (as quoted by The Verge on Sunday, May 28, 2023).
Through this collaboration, Ford customers will gain access to Tesla’s exceptional charging network, while Tesla will receive crucial support for Ford’s charging technology.

Coinciding with the partnership announcement, the analytics company declared the Tesla Model Y as the world’s top-selling vehicle, whether powered by a combustion engine or electric.
Farley emphasized that all current and future Ford customers in the United States will have access to Tesla’s extensive network of 12,000 superchargers.
Beyond the charging adapter, Tesla is also opening additional opportunities for Ford. Farley clarified that Ford users will not be required to utilize the Tesla app; instead, they can activate and monitor charging sessions directly within the FordPass app.
“While utilizing Tesla Superchargers, our customers remain loyal to Ford. We are mindful of their convenience and do not want them to switch to Tesla software, although it is part of the agreement,” Farley explained.
