Tesla has once again made headlines with its claim that its electric car, the Model Y, is the most efficient electric SUV ever made. The company made this assertion via its official Twitter account, quoted from the insideevs page, on Wednesday (3/5/2023).
Furthermore, Tesla includes a ranking list of the most efficient all-wheel drive (AWD) electric SUVs sold in the US, based on their Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ratings. Among these vehicles, Tesla’s Model Y AWD tops the list with an efficiency rating of 4 miles per kilowatt-hour (mi/kWh).
Tesla’s Model Y AWD Outperforms Other Competitors
According to the latest EPA ratings, the most efficient 2023 model year variant of the Tesla Model Y is rated at 3.6 mi/kWh or 28 kWh/100 miles. While this doesn’t fundamentally change the validity of Tesla’s claims, it is noteworthy that the Model Y remains the most efficient all-electric AWD SUV yet.
The data shows that the Model Y AWD outperforms other competing models such as the Volkswagen ID.4 (3.2 mi/kWh), Ford Mustang Mach-E (3.1 mi/kWh), Jaguar I-Pace (2.7 mi/kWh), and Audi e-tron (2.6 mi/kWh).

The LFP Battery-Powered Model Y Standard Range RWD
Interestingly, Tesla is planning to sell a more efficient Model Y in the US, namely the LFP battery-powered Model Y Standard Range RWD that was recently launched in Canada. With a smaller battery pack, the new version can be even more efficient than the previous rear-wheel drive (RWD) trim.
Despite having a heavier LFP battery cell, the Model Y Standard Range RWD achieves greater efficiency. While there are no official figures yet, looking at all the efficiency figures according to the EPA’s test cycle, one can expect the new version to be even more efficient.
Tesla Makes the Most Efficient Electric SUVs Sold Today
In conclusion, Tesla’s Model Y AWD has rightfully earned its claim as the most efficient electric SUV in the US. While there are other electric SUVs available in the market, Tesla’s Model Y AWD stands out with its impressive efficiency rating of 4 mi/kWh.
Furthermore, Tesla’s LFP battery-powered Model Y Standard Range RWD has the potential to be even more efficient than the previous RWD trim. All in all, it is clear that Tesla continues to lead the pack when it comes to making the most efficient electric SUVs sold today.
